President Luis Abinader announced on Monday, 10 November 2025 that he will inaugurate a massive new logistics hub at Punta Cana International Airport this Wednesday, a project poised to significantly bolster the nation’s competitiveness and cement its status as the predominant logistics center of the Caribbean and Latin America.

The President made the declaration during his weekly press engagement, “LA Semanal con la Prensa,” held this week in Punta Cana, La Altagracia province.

When questioned about the impact of recent sector investments, Abinader underscored the importance of the new facility, stating, “We are already a great logistics hub. Next Wednesday, we will inaugurate the Punta Cana airport logistics hub, which will be of great importance.”

The President emphasized that the new infrastructure complements other strategic national projects, such as the Port of Caucedo and the Port of Manzanillo (currently under construction), aligning with his administration’s...

The five-year delay in fully commissioning Haiti’s Terminal Varreux Bolloré (TVB), a US$60 million international-standard port facility, is a critical warning for the entire island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti), underscoring how anti-competitive practices and government inaction in one nation can undermine the shared goal of creating strong, cost-effective, and resilient logistics and cargo chains vital for regional and island economic growth and attracting foreign direct investment.

The high maritime costs in Haiti especially affect low-income consumers in Haiti yet the impact is felt on the entire island as Haitians migrate to the Dominican Republic seeking lower cost of living. Increased competition from a fully operational TVB are seen as a way to drive down costs in Haiti, benefiting consumers and motivating new investments on both sides of the island of Hispaniola.

The long-time Achilles heel of Haiti seems not to be just gang violence, but rather its...

In a major ceremony, President Luis Abinader spoke of the heroic sacrifices Juan Rodriguez Garcia made and called the placement of his remains in the National Pantheon “historic justice.”

Rodriguez, known as Juancito to just about everyone, was a very successful farmer and rancher during the 1930s and 1940s, tending large areas of plaintain and cattle farms. He was considered to be one of the wealthiest persons in the Dominican Republic.

He gave up everything, including the loss of one of his children to the cause of ridding the republic of the Trujillo dictatorship.

As a result of his resistance to the Trujillo dictatorship, Juancito Rodriguez, a man who had served as a deputy and a senator in the Dominican Congress, was forced into exile and so dedicated his fortune to the defeat of Trujillo.

He financed small invasions which were rapidly cut down by the dictator and lost his son during the 14 June 1959 expedition from Cuba.

His continuous sacrifices for the...

According to the investigation carried out by the prosecutors, the case is built on hundreds of pieces of evidence that point to the criminal responsibility of the defendants.

Following remarks that 58-year old President Luis Abinader maintains a rigorous pace, logging over 300 official activities a year with virtually no days off, a leading internist has weighed in on the potential health risks associated with such a demanding lifestyle, N Digital reports. President Abinader is not known to have ever taken even a week off from his taxing schedule since his government began on 16 August 2020.

Dr. Jorge Luis Vólquez, an internist at the Padre Billini Teaching Hospital and president of the Dominican Society of Internal Medicine (SMIRD), explained the possible effects of a high-workload schedule, though he was quick to assure that there is “no cause for concern” regarding the President’s current health, as reported in N Digital.

The specialist indicated that an individual with an intense schedule who fails to plan for...

A national earthquake evacuation drill, mandated by President Luis Abinader and organized by the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) in coordination with the the National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie), along with other national emergency agencies to prepare the public for potential natural disasters, saw widespread participation and notable success, including a record evacuation time at a major government building.

The drill, the fifth annual exercise directed by the COE, commenced shortly after 9:50am on Wednesday, 5 November 2025.

The abrupt cancellation of the Summit of the Americas, a mere 29 days before its scheduled opening, has effectively rendered years of meticulous preparation and significant financial investment obsolete, an editorial El Caribe sent to its readers observes.

Since July 2022, over three years of intensive planning have gone into organizing the event. This includes the payment of US$500,000 to the Organization of American States (OAS) for the hosting rights. Suspending the summit at this late stage translates into a massive waste of both funds and thousands of man-hour, an editorial in El Caribe newsletter sent out on 5 November 2025.

The human and material resources poured into this effort are almost incalculable, remarks the media.

Consequently, El Caribe says it is trivial to spend time musing over where the 3,215 guayabera-style shirts commissioned by the Foreign...

The Senate of the Dominican Republic is facing intense scrutiny over its decision to acquire and place RD$75 million (approximately US$1.3 million) in holiday bonds for distribution at their discretion. Civil society organizations argue the holiday bonds distorts the legislative function and highlights the deficiencies in public spending efficiency.

Representatives from various civil society groups have labeled the acquisition as a populist measure, insisting that such actions detract from the primary legislative and oversight roles of the National Congress.

According to the organizations consulted, both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies should refrain from activities involving the donation or distribution of resources, functions they assert fall outside the scope of their mandated responsibilities under current regulations.

A severe deficit in organ donation is gripping the Dominican Republic, as health authorities appeal to the public for a cultural shift to save hundreds of lives. Currently, 530 people are on the waiting list for a kidney, yet the country’s donation rate remains critically low.

Data presented by officials from the National Institute for the Coordination of Transplants (Incort) revealed a stark reality: so far in 2025, only 49 donations have been secured, a fraction of the 200 needed to be considered acceptable. These 49 donations (10 from deceased donors and 39 from living individuals) have nonetheless made a significant impact, benefiting 345 people. A single deceased donor can donate up to eight organs, including two lungs, two kidneys, a heart, and a liver, in addition to considerable tissues.

The Presidency says that President Luis Abinader himself will not attend COP30 from 6 to 21 November in Belem, Brazil. When a journalist asked about the Climate Change Summit during the press conference of Monday, 3 November, the President had said he would be there.

But by Tuesday, the director for strategic communications of the Presidency, Felix Reyna shared a note saying the President would not travel to Brazil because he had to remain in the DR to attend to other matters.

The DR is likely to be represented by Max Puig, the president of the National Council for Climate Change and Carbon Market. Puig is a former Minister of Environment. When in Brazil for the Pre-COP30, on 16 October 2025, he stated that the climate agenda has become a fundamental axis for driving economic and social transformation processes in countries.

The president of the Senate, Ricardo de los Santos (PRM-Sanchez Ramirez), has emphatically stated that the Dominican Republic currently lacks the economic conditions to authorize the indexing of salaries, effectively dismissing a bill introduced by opposition senator Omar Fernández (Fuerza del Pueblo – National District) aimed at relieving the tax burden on lower-income workers, as reported in Hoy.

The Fernandez proposal, which seeks to index the Income Tax (ISR) for monthly incomes up to RD$52,000, was met with immediate resistance from lawmakers of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). Given the PRM’s absolute majority in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, their opposition signals a high probability that the bill will not pass.

Senator De los Santos explained that while Fernández’s proposal “is very well received by society,” the nation’s fiscal reality prevents...

The Dominican Republic is on track to record its lowest birth rate in two decades this year, a sharp decline that appears to be directly linked to new government restrictions on healthcare services for Haitian mothers, Diario Libre reports.

Official statistics from the Central Electoral Board (JCE) show that as of 2 November 2025, total registered births stood at 148,722, nearly 10,000 fewer than the same period in 2024.

The decline is acutely pronounced among foreign nationals. Registrations of foreign-born children plummeted by 8,176 this year, falling from 20,502 to just 12,326 in the same period.

This drop coincides with the government’s implementation of a new hospital protocol in April 2025, which restricts maternity care for Haitian women—a move aimed at curbing what authorities refer to as “birth tourism” from the neighboring country. The new protocols allow...

The National Union of Firefighters (Unabon) is demanding that the President and the National Congress update the National Firefighters Law 51-10, which has been in effect since 1912. Their goal is to modernize the legal framework governing the fire-extinction service and secure significant improvements in their working conditions.

Firefighters are claiming their institutional “birth certificate” and a regulation that supports them in the face of unpredictable emergencies.

Unabon representatives held a press conference to request the update of the more than 113-year-old law. The head of the organization, Luis Elías Esmurdoc, explained that the current regulation “no longer responds to the current needs of the firefighters nor to the working conditions they face in the 21st century” to guarantee better service to the population.

The new draft bill, which has already...

Luis Ramon Rodriguez / Noticias SIN

Former Minister of Agriculture, Luis Ramón Rodríguez, has sharply criticized the government’s official figures regarding agricultural losses following Tropical Storm Melissa, labeling the reported volume of damages as “exaggerated.” He further cautioned that the declaration of a state of emergency can be used to allow the state-owned insurer, Agrodosa, to avoid paying claims to affected farmers, as reported in Diario Libre.

Rodríguez questioned the “accelerated response” by the government, arguing that natural disaster assessments typically require a technical protocol that takes seven to eight days to complete, not the rapid timeline officials followed.

The former minister alleged that a state of emergency declaration would exempt the Dominican Agricultural Insurance Company (Agrodosa) from its financial obligations.

“If a state...

The need for a robust response became evident in early 2024 following a significant surge in cases. This motivated the design and implementation of the National Plan for Dengue...

Senator Omar Fernández (Fuerza del Pueblo – National District) has submitted a resolution urging the President to instruct the Tax Agency (DGII) to implement the legally mandated indexation of the income tax (ISR) for salaries up to RD$52,000 per month. Fernández argues this is a necessary act of “fiscal justice” that would benefit approximately 720,000 workers, as reported by Noticias SIN.

The last time wages were indexed was in 2017 during the first year of the government of President Danilo Medina (PLD). The general tax law orders the annual indexing of wages to adjust these for inflation.

The proposal, deposited on Monday, 3 November 2025, specifically seeks compliance with Article 327 of the Tax Code, which requires the automatic indexation of the tax-exempt income bracket to counteract inflation. This adjustment, the senator noted, has been successively suspended in...

The Central Electoral Board that handles the official document registry in the Dominican Republic reminds all that the Dominican Constitution does not recognize same-sex marriages. Any same sex wedding officiated in the Dominican Republic is symbolic.

The opinion is issued after former US Ambassador Wally Brewster carried out a symbolic marriage of two same sex persons at a hotel in Santiago de los Caballeros.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) of the Dominican Republic issued the public clarification on Sunday, 3 November 2025, asserting that only marriages between a man and a woman are recognized under the nation’s legal framework.

The statement follows a social media post by former US ambassador to the country, Wally Brewster, who published an image on his Instagram account claiming to have officiated a same-sex wedding in the city of...

The goal is to vaccinate over 60,000 pets through a massive house-to-house operation. In addition to the mobile teams, three fixed posts have been established at strategic locations: the Provincial Health Agency office, the Health Park (Parque de la Salud), and the Anamelia Park (Parque de Anamelia).

Weather conditions are expected to improve this week after the passing of Tropical Storm Melissa and the follow-up tropical wave and trough that brought more intense rains. The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) says that San Jose de Ocoa and Barahona continue under emergency conditions, with school classes yet to resume because of the continuing rains and flooding threat and need for repairs.

Fernando Tatis Jr. has been named the best defensive right fielder in Major League Baseball National League. The announcement tells of the versatility of Tatis who in 2023 had played shortstop instead of in the outfield.
